A transformer with enclosure, also known as a box type substation or prefabricated substation, integrates high-voltage switchgear, transformer unit, and low-voltage distribution system into a compact metal enclosure. Thanks to its compact footprint, fast installation, and low maintenance requirements, it is widely applied in urban distribution networks, renewable energy integration, AI data centers, rail transit, and industrial parks. With expanding global demand, manufacturers are increasing production capacity and adopting automated equipment to ensure consistent quality.

Producing high-quality transformer with enclosure units that comply with IEC and GB standards requires a complete set of professional manufacturing equipment. The following sections introduce the key equipment used throughout the production process.

box type transformer manufacturing

Silicon Steel Slitting and Core Cutting Equipment

The transformer core forms the magnetic circuit and directly affects no-load loss and efficiency. The production process begins with cutting silicon steel coils into precise laminations. Silicon steel slitting lines divide wide coils into narrow strips with high dimensional accuracy, reducing burrs and improving stacking quality.

Core cut-to-length lines then cut laminations to exact dimensions, often using step-lap or miter cutting to reduce core losses. After cutting, laminations are assembled on core stacking tables equipped with hydraulic tilting mechanisms, allowing accurate alignment and easier coil installation.

Coil Winding Equipment

Transformer coils determine electrical performance and mechanical strength. Foil winding machines are widely used for low-voltage windings, providing uniform insulation and strong short-circuit resistance. These machines support both copper and aluminum foil winding configurations.

Automatic coil winding machines are used for high-voltage cylindrical or continuous windings. Advanced systems precisely control tension and speed, ensuring uniform winding layers and improving production efficiency. Modern winding machines support a wide range of transformer capacities.

Vacuum Drying and Impregnation Equipment

Insulation processing is critical for transformer reliability. Vacuum drying ovens remove moisture from coils and core assemblies by heating under low pressure. Eliminating moisture significantly improves dielectric strength and service life.

Vacuum pressure impregnation equipment is commonly used for dry-type transformer coils. The process first removes air under vacuum and then injects insulating resin under pressure, improving bonding strength and mechanical rigidity. After impregnation, coils are cured at controlled temperatures to form durable insulation.

For high-voltage applications, vapor phase drying systems may be used. These systems heat components uniformly using condensed vapor, achieving deep moisture removal and improved insulation performance.

Vacuum Oil Filling Equipment

Oil-filled transformer with enclosure units require vacuum oil filling after assembly. Vacuum oil filling plants evacuate the tank to remove air and moisture before injecting processed transformer oil. Automated control systems regulate temperature, humidity, and oil flow, ensuring consistent filling quality and reducing production time.

Enclosure Fabrication Equipment

The metal enclosure provides environmental protection and mechanical strength. Laser cutting machines precisely cut steel sheets with high dimensional accuracy, improving product appearance and sealing performance. CNC press brakes form structural panels with accurate bending angles.

Robotic welding systems are used to assemble enclosure panels. Automated welding ensures consistent weld quality, improves sealing performance, and increases production efficiency.

Electrical Testing Equipment

Before delivery, transformers must undergo comprehensive electrical testing. Transformer test benches perform ratio measurement, winding resistance testing, no-load loss testing, and load loss testing. Power frequency withstand voltage test equipment verifies insulation strength under high voltage.

Partial discharge measurement systems detect insulation defects by monitoring discharge signals, ensuring long-term reliability. These tests confirm compliance with IEC 60076 and other international standards.

High-quality transformer with enclosure manufacturing relies on a coordinated set of advanced equipment. From core cutting and coil winding to vacuum drying, enclosure fabrication, and final testing, each stage directly influences performance and reliability. With growing demand from renewable energy, data centers, and smart grids, manufacturers must continue investing in modern equipment and process optimization to remain competitive in the global market.
